On my daily commute to work, I pass the Bloomberg headquarters building on Lexington Ave. in Midtown Manhattan. At the front building entrance is stationed a NYPD patrol car and at least two heavily armed specially trained anti-terrorist officers. Michael Bloomberg’s current office is in the building and I assume that they are assigned to him as a permanent security detail because of his position as a former Mayor of New York City. It is interesting to note that Michael Bloomberg is both a long term vocal and active public proponent of stricter gun control laws while being a direct beneficiary of a heavily armed security detail.
As a casual observer, this armed detail seems to be an effective deterrent and lends a sense of security to the thousands of workers in the building. Many of our most important public buildings and transportation hubs have an armed security presence on site. Given a series of serious mass shootings at public schools, it seems a logical next step is to implement some sort of an armed security deterrence in our vulnerable public schools. While Congress is at work debating responses to prevent future school shootings; it is interesting to note that their offices are protected by the armed US Capitol Police.
Models of how to provide better levels of security for public schools are readily available from many places, however, once again a perplexing and disturbing aspect of the contemporary American political scene comes into play. A period of acrimonious political debate followed the recent Florida school shootings and has taken center stage and the will to act on important security issues is lagging.
A Republic of Self-Interest
More highly disturbing is that the lack of action may be intentional on the part of many politicians as they position for power at the expense of students and their parents. It seems to many Americans that various politicians place ideology and maintaining political advantage over working in behalf of the people.
Given our history and traditions, the American people expect and demand much of its government as we face many challenges as a nation. Expectations for our politicians to act quickly and forcefully to address major challenges are heightened especially when a national tragedy on the scale of the recent Florida school shootings occurs.
Many of the challenges faced by our nation are daunting and complex, however, solutions must be formulated and action must be taken. There is no lack of examples of efforts in the private sector and programs and policies in the government sector available on a global basis at work today that are proven to be effective and those that are ineffective and to be avoided.
Our Re-Founding Father
On April 19, 1775 eight Militiamen were killed and ten more were wounded at Lexington, Massachusetts in the first battle in The War for Independence. It was called the “Shot heard ‘round the world”. Millions of Americans over the years have worked and fought tirelessly so all of us can live in freedom.
The great American experiment instituted by The Founding Fathers is based on the premise that man can rule himself. This proposition was put to a critical test over the Obama years as more and more power was consolidated in the hands of a rapidly expanding Federal Government resulting in much discontent across the land. The election in November of 2016 was in many ways a fundamental test of most voter’s resolve to continue to live in liberty and to exercise the responsibility of such a choice.
America has a unique opportunity now in our history. President Trump is a relentless man of action and in practice has enacted a conservative agenda that increases freedom for everyday Americans. In contrast, we have an increasingly radicalized and left leaning Big Government Democratic Party seemingly still stuck in the days of Woodstock addressing non-existent problems and dealing with peripheral issues that adds up to an agenda greatly out of touch with mainstream America.
At a hyper active pace, President Trump is moving ahead to enact the promises made on the campaign trail and working diligently in behalf of the American people. His major contributions so far in decreasing government regulations and enacting tax reduction frees up every day Americans to do what they do best which is to create an increased level of economic prosperity. This leads to more money in the hands of individuals and the private sector to invest in productive ways and improves the overall quality of life in our country. Our country will increasingly thrive as we provide more support these days to an American private sector that is the most vibrant, effective and innovative force in the world. In the private sector, competition, accountability and creativity breeds a level of excellence in execution and an unmatched capability to deliver high quality products and services on a global basis and create a higher standard of living for our country.
President Trump makes this a time for Americans to be able to reclaim and exercise their freedoms for a restored America. We are counting on President Trump to continue to work to make sure that Government plays a more limited role in all our lives. If President Trump continues to successfully enact his agenda, he will indeed be our Re-Founding Father.
