The NBC sitcom Seinfeld was originally broadcast for nine seasons starting in 1989 and ending in 1998 and remains widely available today as reruns on several channels and streaming TV services. The series had a powerful and far-reaching cultural impact on our country with many Americans having their favorite episodes, characters and quite often were moved to the point of adopting sayings, names and descriptive language from the show. I have several favorite episodes, however, a major premise presented in “The Opposite” that ran on the fifth season of the series stands the test of time and can be interpreted as a potential valuable guide to our political environment.
In this episode, an important scene takes place in their local café as George Costanza remarks to Jerry Seinfeld that every decision he has ever made has been wrong, and that his life is the exact opposite of what it should be. Therefore, George experiments with doing the complete opposite of what he would do normally in his life and by following this advice he goes on for the rest of the episode succeeding in all the different things he attempts.
In the 2016 election, the American people in sufficient enough numbers followed George Costanza like logic by doing something directly opposite conventional political wisdom. Hillary Clinton was the odds on favorite to win the election with the Mainstream Media and political establishment predicting Donald Trump having little chance for victory. To their everlasting dismay, the American people acted decisively in their bid to improve their life prospects by electing Donald Trump as President. Trump supporters voted to reclaim the government from the established elites, the insiders and to change the status quo.
As a result of Trump’s instincts, long time observations of the political landscape and his highly successful business background, he won by passionately advocating his own distinctive America First agenda. Trump won on the issues by focusing his campaign on solving long standing economic and political challenges that afflicted numerous everyday people who were increasingly overlooked by the elites in power. Trump’s win was a seismic negative reaction to the ongoing political stalemates in Washington, an acknowledgement of the overt failures of the Obama Administration and a severe repudiation of the Democratic Party’s progressive political agenda. The Democrats with their poor performance in office leading the country lost the trust of a large enough number of voters for their candidate Hillary Clinton to lose.
Since his election, President Trump has led the way working at a furious pace and demonstrated strong leadership by enacting his America First political agenda including addressing the economy, immigration, trade policy, energy, law enforcement and foreign policy in ways which are diametrically opposite to the stances of the Democratic Party and much of today’s political establishment. He has consistently worked to enact his campaign promises to the best of his ability while working to overcome a hostile, hateful and poisonous political environment created by the Democrats and their many allies including both the Mainstream and Social Media, the cultural elites, the entertainment industry, academia and quite often the corporate world. So far in his three plus years of his Administration, the progress and success of President Trump on so many fronts are historic in nature.
President Trump has made achieving the American Dream possible again and in reach for so many more people all across the country because the economy is booming and providing opportunities for the entire cross section of society including minorities and women along with less educated and lower skilled workers. The Trump Administration is focused daily in a relentless drive to provide results and solutions for everyday people and remake the world order in a way that is favorable to our country and makes the world overall a safer place.
A series of radical left leaning positions based on promoting identity politics, socialism and higher taxes, globalism, eliminating all fossil fuels, radical climate change policies under the label the “Green New Deal”, “Medicare for All”, post-term abortion, fighting for “social justice”, gun confiscation and favoring open borders dominate the Democratic Party’s political agenda and also the policy positions of their candidates running in the Democratic Presidential primary. Overall the true objectives of current Democratic Party policy are to undermine the foundations of our country and replace our political system with one that imposes upon the American people a government that is empowered to be more involved in our lives to a degree that includes dictating and dominating our personal thoughts, daily activities and imposing limits on our freedoms by implementing socialism.
In our increasingly interconnected world, nations as well as locales face many similar challenges. There are many examples of government programs and policies at work today that function well and those that are ineffective and should be avoided. Objectively examining Socialist and progressive policies in effect in locales around the world which often are of the type advocated by today’s Democratic Party politicians, we find widespread failure of governance. This can be found from the streets of San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago and New York in our country to international cities such as London, Paris, Hamburg and Stockholm. The citizens of these cities face a variety of increasingly intractable challenges and devastating, and dire conditions often caused and made worse by their left wing style governments.
California now leads our country in poverty levels, homelessness and even power outages. New York’s high taxes are driving more people to leave that state than any other in our country. Chicago, Baltimore and now London all which have extremely restrictive gun laws are overwhelmed by violence. The Democrats strongly support the establishment in the U.S. of a Federally run single payer health care system. Canada’s and the U.K.’s Government-run healthcare systems are dismal failures while ours remains the best in the world. The Democratic Party officially favors open borders, unlimited immigration and sanctuary cities even with ample evidence ranging from France, Sweden, Germany to the U.K. of the negative impact of uncontrolled immigration on these societies.
Like George Costanza in “The Opposite” episode, our nation must continue on the path to success by steadily moving politically in the opposite direction of the Anti-American and anti-capitalist ideas that form the basis of the radical Democratic Party political agenda. Each of their current policy stances is intended to reverse the direction taken and will impede the remarkable progress made so far by the Trump Administration.
A Democratic win in 2020 will lead us back full circle to experience the similar dire results and overt corruption that worked to undermine our country during the Obama years. In addition, any objective observer can also discern that progressive policies in practice are increasingly detrimental to any place in the world they are in effect. The lesson learned and a quick guide for voters in 2020; the evidence is clear that they should subject any policy advocated by the Left and Democratic politicians to the George Costanza test and be confident that the opposite policy is the right one for our country and the world.
